MULTILOOP Multiple recycling and heat recovery of grey water

The goal of the MULTILOOP research project (01.06.2019 to 31.05.2022) is to develop a certified, modular and scalable prototype that treats shower water so that it can be used again for showering. The water is treated in accordance with the German Drinking Water Ordinance. Thus, the same water is to be reused several times, with the aim of closing the water cycle as far as possible and at the same time using the energy potential of the hot water. The goal is to save about 85% of the water and 67% of the energy consumption. Full commercialisation requires a marketable combination of reproducible water quality, low energy consumption, simplicity of design and economic investment and operating costs. By saving water and heating energy at the same time, the systems are expected to pay for themselves in five years.

In the MULTILOOP project, a prototype is being developed for a commercial application (fitness studio) in order to test and optimise the technologies (in particular the innovative plasma treatment system) and the overall process set up with it. The findings from the prototype system are the basis for the development of a fully dimensioned model series of grey water recycling systems. This series should cover a treatment capacity of 10 - 100 m³/day.
Each greywater recycling system in this range comprises four separate and specific treatment stages for treatment according to drinking water standards. The first stage is coarse filtration to remove dirt, followed by a biological treatment stage. MULTILOOP's newly developed non-thermal plasma treatment technology is required to break down dissolved and non-biodegradable substances. The final stage is ultrafiltration with a special coating to remove bacteria, viruses and dissolved residues. A utilization of the project results in the first 1-2 years after project end is the overall goal. The focus is on systems with a treatment capacity of 10 - 100 m³ /day as a complete solution (plug-and-play).

Demonstrator system at INTEWA

A MULTILOOP demonstrator system has been set up in the INTEWA premises, in which employees have been able to shower regularly for test purposes since August 2022.

Water treatment technologies:

  1. PURAIN pre-filtration
  2. Biological treatment in a MBBR (= moving bed biofilm reactor)
  3. AQUALOOP membran ultrafiltration with a pore size <0,02 µm
  4. AOP (= advanced oxidation process) using a non-thermal-plasma unit
  5. Activated carbon filtration
  6. UV disinfection
