Description of the tunnel
In the heart of Cristo Rey, San José, Costa Rica - a community that has always struggled with social deprivation - the "Albergue Torres Obras del Espíritu Santo" rises as a symbol of hope and change. Developed by the Asociación Obras del Espíritu Santo, the shelter was created to provide vulnerable young people with a safe, stable environment in which they can strive for their education, personal development and a better future.
From the outset, the project took both social impact and environmental responsibility into account. Given the urban density of the area and the importance of proper stormwater management, a high capacity underground retention solution was integrated into the development. A 400m³ system was installed beneath the complex using INTEWA's Drainmax tunnel technology.
The modular tunnel system efficiently captures and temporarily stores rainwater during heavy storms, preventing overloading of the drainage system and reducing flood risk to the site and surrounding neighbourhood. Its structural strength, large storage capacity and adaptable design made it an ideal solution for a project of this scale and use.
The Albergue Torres Obras del Espíritu Santo is more than just a construction project. It shows how thoughtful engineering and social engagement work together to strengthen communities and create a safe environment for people to call home while protecting the environment.
