The heart of water treatment - AQUALOOP membranes
The special hollow membrane fibers reliably retain bacteria and viruses. The special design and arrangement enables a very long service life of up to 10 years with very low maintenance. The AQUALOOP water treatment can do without chemical additives, such as harmful chlorine. This is equally positive for the environment and the wallet.
Investigations at the Salzburg wastewater treatment plant have shown that even in the case of heavily polluted wastewater treatment plant water, the limit values according to the TWVO are complied with in bacteriological terms.
In order to check whether the treated water meets drinking water quality, the other parameters of the relevant drinking water ordinance must be fulfilled. The water is generally suitable for service water in the household as well as for irrigation purposes. AQUALOOP undercuts beside the hygienic requirements:
BOD < 5mg/l
Filterable substances < 10mg/l
- WHO / EU Bathing Water Directive
- fbr information sheet H201 for grey water systems
- DIN 19650 Quality requirements for irrigation water
- NSW Health Department, Australia 2005
- BS 8525-1:2010, UK
- .....
In countries such as Canada, USA and Japan, where a minimum chlorine content (>=0.5 mg/l to 1 mg/l) is prescribed for water treatment to produce process water, this can be achieved with AQUALOOP by means of a separate dosing system or addition in tablet form.
Advantages of MEM technology
- The fibers are protected by the cartridges (hardly any mechanical stress, no installation damage or operating errors).
- Each cartridge has 6 m² filtration area, very high packing density and therefore lowest space and area requirement.
- The small pore size of average 0.02 µm results in a safe removal of up to 99.9999% of bacteria and 99.7% of viruses. No disinfection by-products or odor emissions are generated.
- The membrane fibers are permanently hydrophilic, which means they are immediately functional when they come into contact with water; drying out does not damage the membrane.
In contrast to flat membranes, damage to a single fiber has very little effect on the separation efficiency due to the enormous number of fibers and small internal diameter. Furthermore, in the case of a possibly torn hollow fiber, a self-healing effect can be observed, in which a successive closure occurs due to the small inner diameter.
- The physical separation of solids, as well as bacteria and viruses, is safely performed in one process with one and the same equipment.
- The filtration modules have a long life expectancy (10 years, depending on the degree of utilization). They are inexpensive and easy to replace.
- special additives in the PE membrane prevent the growth of microorganisms, suppression 99.97% according to Japan standard JIS Z 2801.
- The membrane is resistant to acid, alkaline and chlorine cleaning agents.
- Backflushable with up to 3 bar possible.
- In use for 10 years.
- Diffuser = air beads = cleaning, air is forced between the fibers, Jete effect, swirling.
- No permanent aeration of the membrane is necessary. The cartridge makes far more efficient use of the scavenging air for cleaning the membranes, thus saving energy.
- In case of chemical cleaning of the membrane, the closed cartridge shape increases its effect without negatively affecting the biological cleaning by dilution effects.

Start and commissioning
MEM cartridges are delivered tested and wetted. These can be used for filtration without pretreatment. During the start-up phase, a slight foaming occurs, which usually subsides quickly. The membranes have hydrophilic properties, i.e. the fibers can be reused even after use and drying out.
Storage conditions
New cartridges should be stored in their original packaging until final installation. The following storage conditions apply:
Store cartridges indoors and away from direct sunlight.
Store the cartridges between 10 - 30 °C.
Store the cartridges at a relative humidity below 70%.
Cleaning the cartridge
Used cartridges are chemically cleaned and then rinsed, then they can be stored dry (see storage conditions). If necessary, the membrane can be chemically cleaned manually within the installed system, see the operating instructions.
